Claire Jensen

29 Hickey Place, Ōpunake 4616, New Zealand

A Kiwi who grew up in North Queensland, Claire traveled the world before settling in Opunake in 2005. Her background in art and education, and an interest in sculpture and design, led her to now working full time in her home-based workshop, The Brown Bach Studio. Claire's current focus is the quality crafting of new and salvaged materials to explore sculptural forms, including a series of beautifully rendered New Zealand and Australian native bird feathers.

Features

In art, as in life, I feel the need to be purposeful. My making begins with the materials at hand, often collected from the community and environment. I am fascinated with materials and have a penchant for tools, I find endless amusement in trialing combinations of these.

I prefer to use manual techniques to create sculpture and functional design pieces with influence from Modernist design, The Arts and Crafts Movement, Scandinavian and Japanese craftsmanship and the art of antiquity. I am conscious to demonstrate sustainable values within my practice.

Much of my current work explores themes relating to nature, the environment and symbols of identity.

My home based studio gallery is located next to the historic Te Namu Pa and the Opunake Loop Trail. I'm also regularly open on weekends and by appointment throughout the year.
