Born and raised in New Plymouth, Suraya has spent time living in Wellington, Sweden and London, returning to Taranaki in 2017. While not making art she works professionally as a digital copywriter, plays piano and sings in the band Late for Life Drawing, and enjoys hanging out the laundry in pleasing colour combinations. She has long made outlandish costumes to be seen at festivals and club nights, but only began painting in 2015, which turned out to be a slippery slope to marrying the artist David Le Fleming. Her mediums include ink drawing, watercolour, costume, glass, oil, acrylic, fibre and anything else that's been left lying around. She's interested in themes such as gender, folk religion, language, belonging and place. Suraya's fond of reprinting her pictures as merch such as fridge magnets, tea towels and stickers, so there will probably be some of that kind of thing available.
