I learnt how to weave harakeke - Phormium Tenax aka NZ Flax 30 years ago, at a workshop in New Plymouth so I could create gifts for friends and whanau. I started free weaving classes at The Waitara Community House for a couple of years before deciding to turn my hobbie into a business. At KareNZ Kitz large Art Studio and Workshop in Waitara I have been teaching weaving and selling harakeke products for nearly 6 years now. I enjoy meeting new people through the workshops and having a shop for customers to browse. I enjoy learning new techniques through online courses and creating many different items with natural fibres. I use dyes made in New Zealand especially for harakeke to give me brightly coloured whenu - weaving strips, and I also work with several different varities of natural, (not dyed) harakeke. I make commission work and love to talk about the way I prepare the harakeke for weaving and am open to custom tailor made workshops and special design products.
