David Le Fleming’s often large, detailed oil paintings explore people
and myth. He uses linear line work to tell the subject’s story,
weaving in defects and faded typography from found objects such as old
car bonnets and decorative brass plates. These aged objects aid in
communicating one of his central themes, the passage of time.
Using resonances with New Zealand’s art canon alongside modest,
relatable subjects, his characters – from everyday people to modern
animal gods – have timeless depth. Le Fleming has roots in Manawatu,
Taranaki and England’s Lake District. Recently returned to New Zealand
after 14 years in London, he has exhibited worldwide and had solo
shows with a Wellington dealer gallery in 2018 and 2019. His work is
collected by Deutsche Bank Art Group, Concord Records and in
collections a far afield as Kuwait and Tokyo.
