Mokau Museum and Gallery

Mokau Museum and Gallery sits on the border between Waikato and Taranaki. It is your first (or last) visit on the Arts Trail through beautiful Taranaki. Here on SH3 sits an intriguing storehouse filled with treasures gathered from the Tainui region – that area which falls loosely between the four tunnels at Mt Messenger, Okau, Awakino and Waikawau.
Exquisite Maori taonga sit alongside pioneers' farm implements and household memorabilia from days gone by. See the last cannonball fired in the Taranaki Wars... scrimshaw bullock horns etched by a prisoner awaiting execution...or the remarkable achievements of Taranaki inventor Barrie Carruthers.
Then make your way down to our art gallery. Amanda Hewlett is the local artist exhibiting during the Arts Trail.Come and enjoy her work, try out the foot-operated pianola and pop into the original Mokau jail. It's all here at Mokau Museum and Gallery, open seven days. Koha entry.
